Indications
- Evaluation for Acquired Disorders of Fibrinogen
- Evaluation for Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) (see Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, [[Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation]])
- Evaluation for Liver Disease (see End-Stage Liver Disease, [[End-Stage Liver Disease]])
- Evaluation for Primary Hyperfibrinolysis (see Hyperfibrinolytic States, [[Hyperfibrinolytic States]])
Physiology
- Fibrinogen is the Precursor to Fibrin
- Fibrinogen Levels are Measured in Plasma: fibrinogen cannot be measured in serum, since it is removed along with the clotted cellular elements
Etiology of Decreased Plasma Fibrinogen
- Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) (see Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, [[Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation]])
- Liver Disease (see End-Stage Liver Disease, [[End-Stage Liver Disease]])
Technique
- Normal Fibrinogen Level: >100-150 mg/dL
