Propoxyphene (Darvon)
Epidemiology
- Commonly used orally in suicide attempts
- May also be crushed, dissolved, and abused in IV form
Pharmacology
Adverse Effects
- Acute Hypoventilation (see Acute Hypoventilation)
- Clinical: due to to rapid absorption, death can occur within 30 min after oral ingestion
- Treatment: naloxone
- Acute Lung Injury-ARDS (see Acute Lung Injury-ARDS)
- Epidemiology: has been reported
- Treatment: supportive
- Talc/Foreign Body Granulomatosis (see Foreign Body Granulomatosis)
- Epidemiology: when propoxyphene is injected IV
