Yersinia Enterocolitica Contaminated PRBC Transfusion
Epidemiology
- Occurs due to transfusion of PRBC contaminated with Yersinia Enterocolitica
- Donors of contaminated blood usually had GI illness
Physiology
- Febrile reaction to Y. Enterocolitica (which may grow at 4°C during blood storage)
- No hemolyis occurs
Clinical Presentations
- Fever (see [[Fever]]): occurs >1 hr after transfusion is completed
Treatment
- Prevention: screening of donors for GI illnesses
