Some Moraxella species are rarely pathogenic in humans and some colonize the upper respiratory tract, skin, and urogenital tract
Bacterial keratitis: a prospective clinical and microbiological study. Br J Ophthalmol. 2001 Jul;85(7):842-7 [MEDLINE]
85 consecutive patients (mean age 44.3 (SD 20.7) years) were prospectively enrolled from 1 March 1997 to 30 November 1998. The following risk factors were identified: contact lens wear, 36%; blepharitis, 21%; trauma, 20%; xerophthalmia, 15%; keratopathies, 8%; and eyelid abnormalities, 6%. The most commonly isolated bacteria were Staphylococcus epidermidis, 40%; Staphylococcus aureus, 22%; Streptococcus pneumoniae, 8%; others Streptococcus species, 5%; Pseudomonas, 9%; Moraxella and Serratia marcescens, 5% each; Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Alcaligenes xyloxidans, Morganella morganii, and Haemophilus influenza, 1% each. 1-15% of strains were resistant to fluoroquinolones, 13-22% to aminoglycosides, 37% to cefazolin, 18% to chloramphenicol, 54% to polymyxin B
Moraxella nonliquefaciens, a commensal organism of the upper respiratory tract, is generally considered to have low pathogenic potential. We report here two cases of severe endophthalmitis occurring 9 years and 2 months after glaucoma filtration surgery, respectively. Apart from sulfonamide, very low MICs were recorded for several antibiotics tested. Identification was based on phenotypic characteristics in combination with sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene
Moraxella keratitis: predisposing factors and clinical review of 95 cases. Br J Ophthalmol. 2006 Oct;90(10):1236-8 [MEDLINE]
95 episodes of Moraxella keratitis were identified in 92 patients. 3 (3.2%) patients had recurrent keratitis. The mean age of the patients was 70 (range 17-93) years. Multiple predisposing factors were identified in 23 (24%) eyes, including corneal graft (n = 15), previous herpes keratitis (n = 15) and eye lid diseases (n = 15). Adjunctive procedures were carried out in 42 eyes. These included botulinum toxin injection (n = 17), tarsorraphy (n = 12), penetrating keratoplasty (n = 8), enucleation (n = 3), tissue adhesive and bandage contact lens (n = 4), and conjunctival flap (n = 5). Polymicrobial infection was present in 17 eyes. Final visual acuity was counting finger orless in 25 (26%) eyes
