History
- Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Mandate (1998): the FDA began requiring manufacturers to add folate to enriched breads, cereals, flours, cornmeals, pastas, rice, and other grain products
- As cereals and grains are widely consumed in the US, these products have become very important contributors of folate to the American diet
- The food folate fortification program was initially projected to increase folate intake in the US by approximately 100 mcg/day, but the program actually increased mean folate intake to about 190 mcg/day
