Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon)
Exposure
- Heating of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE/Teflon): generates toxic inhalational compounds
- While these can be toxic to humans, they are especially toxic to birds
Clinical Presentations
- Polymer Fume Fever (see Polymer Fume Fever, [[Polymer Fume Fever]])
- Occurs with exposure to fumes generated from PTFE heated at lower temperatures
- Acute Lung Injury-ARDS (see Acute Lung Injury-ARDS, [[Acute Lung Injury-ARDS]])
- Occurs with exposure to fumes generated from PTFE heated at higher temperatures (generally >450 degrees F)
