Methyl Isothiocyanate
Epidemiology
- Mass exposure with industrial accidents have been reported
Etiology
- Breakdown Product of Soil Fumigant, Metam Sodium: used agriculturally
- Although methyl isothiocyanate is a component of cigarette smoke, its link to disease is unclear
Physiology
- Methyl Isothiocyanate Inhalation
- Respiratory Irritant: no cyanide-mediated mechanism is involved
Clinical
- Cough (see Cough, [[Cough]])
- Acute Lung Injury-ARDS (see Acute Lung Injury-ARDS, [[Acute Lung Injury-ARDS]])
- Pathology: diffuse alveolar damage
Treatment
- Steroids: may be benficial in acute lung injury, but are unproven
